The Free Terminal Program. Explained Honestly. Including the Parts Most Processors Leave Out.
Free Terminal Programs Are Usually a 48 Month Lease Wearing a Costume.
Sidekick places the hardware at no cost to the business. No equipment lease. No buyout clause. No early termination fee. The terminal stays Sidekick property. Stop processing and ship it back. That is the entire arrangement.
Search the phrase free credit card terminal and hundreds of results promise the same thing. Most of them are selling a noncancelable equipment lease at 39 to 59 dollars a month for 48 months. That is roughly 1,900 to 2,800 dollars for a device that retails under 900. The lease is written by a third party financing company. It survives the merchant account. It survives the business closing. Courts have handled thousands of these disputes and the New York Attorney General pursued one of the largest lease originators in the industry over how those agreements were sold.
Nobody Gives Away a 1,699 Dollar Device. Somebody Pays. Find Out Who Before You Sign.
A Clover Station retails near 1,699 dollars. A Clover Mini runs about 799. A Clover Flex sits around 749. Those devices do not become free because a sales rep says the word free. The cost gets recovered somewhere. There are only three places it can hide.
The Equipment Lease
The most common method. A third party leasing company writes a 48 or 60 month agreement that cannot be cancelled. The merchant signs it alongside the processing paperwork and frequently does not realize they are two separate contracts with two separate companies. Switching processors does not end the lease. Closing the business does not end the lease. Industry guidance on this is consistent and blunt. Read the term length and read the cancellation clause before signing anything.
The Inflated Rate
The subsidy gets buried in basis points. A processor prices the account 15 basis points higher plus a per transaction bump plus an annual fee to fund a free terminal. On a business running 250,000 dollars in annual card volume that markup can exceed 1,500 dollars a year. The terminal was free. Year one paid for it anyway. Year four paid for it three more times.
The Junk Fee Stack
Monthly minimums. Statement fees. PCI noncompliance charges. Platform access fees. Batch fees. Each one is small. Together they cover the hardware inside eighteen months and then continue forever.
If a rep cannot answer the question who pays for this hardware and how in one sentence then the answer is the merchant and the rep already knows it.
Placement. Not a Lease. Here Are the Actual Terms in Plain Language.
Sidekick supplies the terminal at no hardware cost to the business. The device remains Sidekick property for the life of the relationship. Nobody signs a lease because there is nothing to finance. Nobody signs a buyout because nobody is purchasing anything.
Processing stays month to month. Walk away any month for any reason. The only obligation attached to the hardware is returning it in working condition within 30 days of the final settlement. [VERIFY return window and condition standard]
That obligation is not a contract on the processing relationship. It is a return policy on borrowed property. Sidekick states it in writing at signing rather than burying it in a schedule nobody reads.
Free Means the Hardware. Here Is Everything Else on the Bill.
Most free terminal pages stop at the word free and let the merchant discover the rest on statement one. That discovery is where processors lose accounts and earn the reputation this industry has. Sidekick publishes the full picture on the marketing page rather than in a footnote.
Clover is a Fiserv product. The hardware and the software are separate purchases. Software plans are billed on a monthly subscription and the tier depends on the business type and the features required. Published plan pricing runs from roughly 14.95 a month at the entry tier to roughly 84.95 a month for full service restaurant configurations. Those figures move by reseller and by agreement. [VERIFY current Sidekick plan schedule]
Any processor that says free Clover and does not mention the software plan is setting up a conversation the merchant will not enjoy having.

One thing every Clover buyer should know. Clover devices are tied to the Clover merchant account they were provisioned under. A Clover terminal cannot be carried to a different processor and reactivated. This is true whether the device was leased or purchased outright or placed for free. Merchants who paid 1,699 dollars for a Station and then switched processors own an expensive brick. Under a placement program the business never spent that money in the first place.
So How Does Sidekick Afford This.
The honest answer and the one competitors avoid printing.
Under a traditional processing agreement the hardware subsidy comes out of the merchant’s rate. That is the inflated basis point model described above and it is why free terminals have the reputation they have.
Sidekick clients run a cash discount program. The cost of card acceptance is recovered at the transaction rather than absorbed by the business. That changes the math on the subsidy. The residual that funds the hardware placement no longer comes out of operating margin because the business is no longer paying the processing cost from margin.
The program has to work for the merchant or the merchant leaves in month two and Sidekick eats the hardware. Month to month terms are not generosity. They are the mechanism that keeps Sidekick accountable. A processor holding a 48 month lease has no reason to answer the phone. A processor holding nothing but a device on someone else’s counter has every reason.
Placement Is Not Automatic. Here Is the Honest Threshold.
Free hardware placement requires enough processing volume to support it. Sidekick does not pretend otherwise. Businesses below the threshold can still open an account and purchase hardware at cost or start on a Clover Go and move up.
Typical qualifying profile
[VERIFY thresholds with underwriting] Established business with a processing history or a viable projection. Monthly card volume sufficient to support the placement. Approved underwriting for the business category. Cash discount or cost recovery program in place.
Categories requiring additional review
Certain healthcare recurring billing and ecommerce models carry higher chargeback exposure and require deeper underwriting. Sidekick flags those on the first call rather than after an application sits for a week.

Lease figures reflect commonly reported industry ranges rather than a specific offer. Confirm any lease term against the actual agreement before signing.
Four Steps.
Statement Review
Send the current processing statement and the current equipment agreement. Sidekick reads both and identifies whether an active lease exists and what it will take to exit or wait it out. Many business owners do not know they have one.
Application
One document. Month to month. Most merchants approve the same day. Categories needing extra review get told upfront.
Placement and Setup
The device ships configured. Installation and training and program signage handled. The team gets a direct number for a person.
Go Live
Processing starts. The cost recovery program runs. Hardware cost stays at zero and stays there.
The Questions Processors Hope Nobody Asks.
Send the Statement. Send the Lease. Get a Straight Answer.
Sidekick will read both documents and say one of three things. Switch now. Wait out the lease and switch then. Or stay where you are because the current deal is better than what Sidekick can offer. The third answer gets given when it is true.
